If you’re moving, there are hundreds of questions swimming around in your head at any given moment! There may be questions for your realtor, questions about your new neighborhood, and questions for a moving company. 


We wanted to make it easy for you. This list features questions you’ll want to remember to ask in each aspect of a move. Some of these will be easily searchable in your new town or state, while some may require asking around. These will help you to feel like you’re on top of your move and moving forward confidently. 


Questions to Ask Your Realtor:

But there are a few things you might want to ask leading up to your move. Trust us, there are absolutely no stupid questions. We promise! 


  • Do you recommend a moving company? 

  • Do you have recommendations for trusted contractors to work on my current home or my new home? 

  • What should I do to prepare for the closing? 

  • Where do I sign?

Questions to Ask a Moving Company: 

It can feel so tricky to hire a moving company! You don’t want to feel like you’re being scammed and you don’t want to overpay. Ask your moving company these questions to feel confident in your choice: 


  • Do you have a license?

  • What will I pay?

  • What happens if my items break?

  • May I hear from some of your references?

Questions to Ask in Your New State: 

Moving to a new state is overwhelming emotionally for most people. There are plenty of things that will also change in a practical way when you move from one state to another. For the average individual, it can feel overwhelming. These questions are a great jumping off point. 


  • What are the local non-emergency numbers?

  • How do I update my car registration? 

  • Where do I update my license? 

  • How do I register to vote, and in which district do I live? 

  • Are there any unique driving laws I should be aware of in this state? 

  • What is the tax structure for the state? 


Questions to Ask in Your New Neighborhood: 


Each neighborhood has its own unique personality. You’re going to love getting to know new neighbors, exploring the local amenities, and settling into your new home. As soon as you move in and meet some locals, it’s a great idea to ask some practical questions. Your realtor may also be able to answer these as well! 


  • How do I register my child for the local schools? 

  • Where is the nearest hospital? What is the fastest route?

  • What is the nearest gas station, grocery store, or pharmacy? 

  • Is there a neighborhood association I should join?

  • Is there a Facebook group or Next Door page I can join to keep up with local happenings and meet neighbors?

  • Are there any rules in this neighborhood that may be unique? 


Getting to know your new town or neighborhood is the fun part of moving. There are lots of fantastic discoveries to make. Asking these questions will help you to settle in quickly!
