Here are 12 ways to make your home more hygge!

  1. Layer Blankets: A cozy blanket, like this velvet throw, to snuggle under is essential for a hygge home. Adding supple textures and extra warmth will really add to the effect. Add a quilt to your bed or a throw to your sofa. Offering extra blankets in baskets is always appreciated during a chilly night.

  2. Keep the Warm Drinks Flowing: Whether you love coffee, tea, cocoa, or a hot toddy, the holidays call for comforting drinks in oversized mugs. Set up a station for your favorite warm drinks.

  3. Go Warm with Lighting: A cool toned lightbulb is great for giving a fresh and bright look to a space, but can sometimes feel stark. Switch your bulbs for warmer toned bulbs to drive home the nostalgic feelings.

  4. Dim for Effect: On a chilly winter evening, it’s a great idea to use low lighting to create a homey mood. Cut the overhead lights, turn on the Christmas tree, and use just a few dim lamps to make a space feel more intimate.

  5. Light a Candle: Not only do candles give off flattering light and a calming glow, they can also add the perfect scent. Scent is one of the senses most strongly associated with our memories. Remind yourself of good times with family and friends by using a scented candle in your home’s hygge setup. This juniper scented candle is a great option!

  6. Build a Fire: While a crackling fire is always fun, it’s not an option for many people. If you don’t have a fireplace, consider watching something like this YouTube fireplace. The act of watching a roaring fire is calming, nostalgic, and warms you through.

  7. Lay Down Extra Rugs: Cold floors are so not hygge. Add some interest to your space with rugs. Layer different types of rugs to make a spot feel even more inviting. This faux sheepskin is the perfect touch!

  8. Put Your Feet Up: Relaxing by the fire or in front of a good movie is always a comfy activity. Make it even more comfortable with the addition of a stuffed footstool or pouffe. Having a place to prop your feet might be just the extra bit of comfort needed.

  9. Pile On the Pillows: Pillows by the dozen will make your space feel softer. Add extra cushions to your couch and bed, or place a few pillows to an oversized basket in your space.

  10. Read and Relax: A well-stocked bookshelf or magazine basket can go a long way toward making your space an escape. Place your winter reads in easy reach to make relaxation easier.

  11. Swap for Socks and Slippers: Have a container near your home’s entrances for warm footwear. Slipping into something more soft and comfortable can help to accomplish your hygge goals. These socks are the ultimate cozy luxury.

  12. Turn Up the Temp: Physical warmth is one aspect of the hygge lifestyle that can’t be missed. If you’re using a fireplace, it will help to add heat. For those who don’t have this luxury, consider other heating measures. You could add a safe space heater to a room where you’ll be relaxing. Heated blankets, heating pads, and hot water bottles can also add physical warmth on the coldest of evenings.

Hygge is a mindset that anyone can adopt. It’s about making your space into one that feels like slipping into a warm pair of pajamas or wrapping your hands around a piping hot mug of something delicious. We think that this winter is the perfect time to start embracing this Danish mindset in your home. We’d love to know how you get into a hygge spirit!
