Beer in one hand grill tool in the other, apron on, music blasting- you’re ready for the all-important grilling season! But is your grill ready? A grill that isn’t in optimal condition will quickly derail your backyard plans and could ruin a delicious cut of meat. Your grill can make summer the best time of year, it’s important that you treat it accordingly.

Before you fire up the old grill this season, do some quick maintenance. To keep summer’s MVP in top shape, follow these great tips.

Charcoal Grills

·         Buy charcoal- It’s important to make sure you’re well stocked on charcoal. Nothing derails a cookout faster than not having charcoal!

·         Clear old ash- Scrub and brush the inside of your charcoal grill. Remnants from last year’s grilling season won’t do anything to help you cook the perfect grilled chicken thighs, we promise.

Gas

·         Check for Leaks- Brush soapy water along the hose between your tank and the grill. If you see bubbles forming, you’ve got a leak.

·         Check the fuel level- You can’t cook on a gas grill without gas! Make sure you have plenty. If you’re unsure, pour a glass of water along the outside of the propane tank. Where the water feels cool, that is your current level.

·         Clean burners- Clear any debris from inside of burners or ports. Make sure the gas is disconnected before you clean.

·         Check the flame’s color- Yellow flames aren’t right. Yellow flames usually indicate there is a problem with the fuel. A blockage or loose fitting hose is usually to blame.

Gas and Charcoal

·         Clean the inside- A vinegar and water combo is a great grill-safe cleaner. Mix equal parts water and distilled vinegar and spray the interior of your grill. Let it sit for a few minutes then easily wipe away any of the mess.

·         Brush the grates- A stiff wire brush is the best way to clean your grill and ensure your food tastes great! Brush and scrub the grill grates with a wire brush each time you cook. It will make your cooking surface more even and your food more delicious.

·         Create a nonstick surface- Before you put on that first kebab or veggie burger, create a great nonstick environment. Pour some oil on a dry paper towel. Using tongs, wipe down each grill grate 3-4 times to create a nonstick coating that won’t flare up. You’ll be glad you did.

We can’t guarantee these tips will keep you from burning the burgers or scorching the hotdogs, but we can guarantee your grill will be ready for summer fun all summer long!
