If you’re a homeowner, you’ve likely heard what a great time it is to sell your home. The current market is still fantastic for homeowners looking to sell. The only issue is that sometimes it’s difficult to know whether it’s a good move for your own situation.

There’s one question you should honestly ask yourself before you consider selling your home or any other property. And that is: Does this still serve me well?

This simple question can apply in a variety of ways. Read on to learn how it could apply in your personal situation.

Does this location still serve me well?

The old adage “location, location, location” is still popular for a reason. Is your current home still serving you and your family? Have you taken a new job or have the kids started school in a different area. If you find that the commute is no longer working, then it’s a great time to consider selling.

Does this community still serve me well?

This is a different question from the location question. Everyone needs different things from their nearby community during different phases of life. These communities could be a place of worship, sports teams, local groups, or even just long-time friends. If you find that friends are inconveniently far away or if family is too far for a visit, then it may be a good time to consider a move. If your physical location is no longer convenient to the communities you’re connected to, then it can be a good opportunity to reevaluate things.

Does this size still serve me well?

The size of your home can quickly go from “comfortable” to “cramped” with the change of a few factors. If you’re now exclusively working from home, you may need a new office area. If you had a new baby, a larger home could be necessary. Likewise, if you’re entering into a new phase of life without little ones around, you could find it’s time to downsize. Just like Goldilocks, we all need to find something that’s “just right”. If your home is no longer serving you in it’s size, then it’s a good idea to consider selling.

Does this design still serve me well?

Much like the above life changes, a home’s design could go from being perfect to being all-around wrong. If you now have teens instead of toddlers, physical layout could make a huge difference. If you’re living in a home with multiple floors and suffering with physical ailments, then the layout may no longer serve you. Even things as simple as a kitchen with plenty of space for kids doing homework could be a game changer. Size isn’t always the only factor that leads to a move. If your home’s design is not serving you, selling may be the best choice.

Does this still serve me financially?

Whether we’re talking about your full-time residence, or a vacation home, a property should serve your financial goals. If you answer no to the above question, then it’s a good idea to consider making a move. This is a question that is highly personal for every homeowner. But it’s a great idea to consider it on a regular basis.
