The lazy days of summer are going to be wrapping up in just a few short weeks. If you haven’t yet taken the kids out of town for a memorable summer vacation or only have a few days to spend, this guide has you covered! Located only a short 1 ½ train ride or 3-hour car drive from Philadelphia, Washington D.C. is brimming with possibilities for a family vacation.

Day One

Get to know the huge variety of animals who live at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

Take an educational and fascinating look into the way money is printed at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

Day Two

Get outside of the city and make a little day trip to Reston, VA and visit the Water Mine Family Swimming Hole.

If you still have a need to splash and want to stay in the city, take the kids to Canal Park Fountains.

Take a look at the United States Botanic Garden for a look at unique flowers and take a respite from the fast pace of our nation’s capital.

Day Three

A can’t miss destination is the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Wonders are hiding around every corner of this iconic museum. Instill an early love of the magic of museums by checking out this location.

International Spy Museum is a great spot for your kids who have aspirations of the international spy life. Check out surveillance gadgets from throughout the years and learn how spies do their job.

Where to Eat

Although D.C. is a great food destination, it can be tricky to find spots that are kid friendly and aren’t boring chain restaurants. Check out these spots for some fun and delicious options with the kids.

Firefly located in the Dupont Circle Hotel, they gives kids cookies to decorate while they wait and they have an extensive kids’ menu.

Old Ebbit Grill features the usual kid’s menu suspects for the pickier in your party, but also features great options for the budding junior gourmet.

Ted’s Bulletin is a great place to grab a sugar fix from their bakery or order some perennial favorite funny face pancakes from the breakfast menu.

Sprout at Saffron gives kids a great opportunity to get some needed play in while mom and dad get in some much needed coffee shop time.

Grab brunch at The Diner and let the kids have some relaxing screen time while watching the cartoons projected on the big screen at this hip spot.

Where to Stay

Book your getaway at the Washington Plaza Hotel. This hotel features the most important kid friendly perk of a pool for splashing in and burning off energy. It also features a great (and FREE) breakfast buffet so that you can feed everyone in the morning without spending a ton or leaving the hotel.

We hope these ideas are a great start to planning a fun and exciting quick getaway to our nation’s capital with the kids. Let us know of your favorite kid friendly destinations in the D.C. area.
