Once A Year Home Maintenance Tasks Every Homeowner Should Do
Being a homeowner comes with an added responsibility that you may not have had to worry about when you were renting. As a homeowner we are sure you have the basics down, but we have compiled a list of the most common missed home maintenance tasks that every homeowner should do each year. With spring around the corner now is the time to start completing some of them.
- Disaster Kit
The weather in spring can be unpredictable at times and it never hurts to be prepared. In your home you need a disaster kit that is stocked with essential supplies for you and your family in case of an emergency. The kit should include at minimum a first-aid kit, nonperishable food to last your family at least three days, and an abundance of water. Yearly, review your kit and remove any expired products. For a full list of supplies to include in your emergency kit, visit ready.gov/kit.
- Examine Maintenance Fees Budget
Home repairs and maintenance can be costly and as a home owner the burden of those costs are yours. It’s a good idea to save at least 1 percent of your home’s value each year to cover maintenance costs. Once a year sit down, examine your budget, and set up a plan to save money to cover those costs.
- Gutters
Each spring clean out your home’s gutters. Leaves and debris can build up causing drainage issues. Don’t forget about your home’s downspouts as well.
- Roof Inspection
When the weather clears inspect your roof for any damage or leaks. Don’t forget to check the eaves and soffits. If there is any damage have it repaired by a professional.
- Windows And Door Screens
Examine the screens on your home’s windows and clean and make repairs as needed. Examine the frames for any damage and apply a new coat of paint if needed. Always replace any broken or worn hardware. It is also a good time to lubricate and tighten door hinges as well.
- Check For Termites
Termites can cause a large amount of damage and it’s one of those things that since it’s out of sight many homeowners never think about. Each year have an inspection done to check for termites. A small fee now could save you thousands in the future.
