Lower Your Energy Bill Without Suffering And At No Cost

In the heat of the summer it is no surprise that energy bills skyrocket, and the idea of having the air in your home set at a level so high you can hardly breathe doesn’t sound ideal.   Lowering your monthly energy bill doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money in purchasing the latest green power contraption. Here are a few tips that will help you lower your energy costs.

Thermostat

Using your home’s thermostat more efficiently will reduce your energy costs.  Start by checking all the vents in your home to make sure that they are open.  Contrary to what you may have been told, closing vents to save energy consumption just does not work. In fact, your air conditioner works harder and in return increases your energy bill.

Optimal Airflow

To keep the temperature in your home at the ideal temperature you need optimal airflow. During the warm summer months the heat escapes your home through the higher parts in your home.  Help the hot air rise by pushing it upwards. You can do this simply by setting your fan to spin counter-clockwise. You should also be changing your home’s air filter on a monthly basis to increase ideal airflow.

Laundry

Save on your energy bill by no longer using your washer’s hot cycle unless it’s needed. Also, make sure you have a full washer, and are using it in the evening when the temperature is lower. 90% of your washer’s energy is used to heat the water.

Home Electronics

While many of the electronics that are in our home these days don’t use a lot of energy, they still impact your overall energy bill.  Video game systems such as an Xbox or a PlayStation 4 can be large energy hogs that use energy when not in use.  To save on energy plug your devices into a power strip and turn it off when the devices are not in use. If you don’t have an extra power strip lying around unplug all devices when not in use.
