A major push in recent weeks has encouraged voters to get registered in anticipation of the upcoming midterm elections on November 6. Here in Pennsylvania, this is an especially important day as we will be voting in both local and congressional races, and electing a new governor. The transportation giants Uber and Lyft are doing their part to get people to the polls next month with free transportation to and from polling locations.

Registration efforts have increased voter registration substantially. Now that you’re registered to vote, the most important step is to actually show up on election day! For many people, transportation to their polling place is a frustrating barrier to completing their civic duty. This is why Lyft and Uber are offering free and discounted rides to those who are unable to make it to the polls otherwise.

Voter turnout for elections is at an all-time low, and these companies hope to help voters overcome some of the most common obstacles. One of the biggest hurdles young voters face on election day is a lack of transportation to the polls. Uber is pairing with nonprofits #VoteTogether and Democracy Works to make it possible for some users to get to their polling places for free on election day. Lyft will discount rides by 50% for users on November 6 with the help of Vote.org, TurboVote, and Nonprofit Vote. Lyft will also provide free rides to the polls in low income areas where transportation is an obstacle.

Both ride apps will also provide unique features that will make it easy for voters to find the place where they’ll vote. By using Uber’s “get to the polls” feature, users will be able to find their polling locations with the touch of a button. Lyft will offer a similar feature to help determine your specific polling place.

These companies want to work together to ensure that you don’t have any excuses on election day. With the day fast approaching, now is a great time to research these great options to help make voting possible or easier on November 6.
