Social media is an indisputable part of our daily lives. We all love the connectivity, ease of communication, and to share the best parts of our days with friends and family from all over the world. One way that homeowners are beginning to use social media is to turn to local groups and pages to connect with members of their community. While you may already be using some of these great sites, there are some you may not know about.

Next Door-

This platform is unique because of its vetting process and criteria to join. To join Nextdoor you enter your address into the site. The website then sends a postcard to your home that will contain a code that will allow you to then join your neighborhood group. Although not failsafe, it guarantees a bit more security against non-residents joining your community’s page.

This app and website offer a great way to keep tabs on local happenings. This is a good place to keep an eye on community concerns such as crime or outages. You can also easily ask for recommendations for service providers from those in your community. Curb Alerts are another great tool that Next Door users use to inform neighbors of free items for grabs. Many users also post items that are for sale or advertise upcoming garage sales on the site.

Next Door is a platform that you won’t want to miss out on when moving to a new neighborhood or establishing a connection with your neighbors in your current community.

Facebook-

Facebook is a treasure trove of local groups. From specialized parenting groups, neighborhood groups, or resale pages. By joining a local group, you can keep tabs on local events, crime, and general trends happening throughout your area.

The most popular social media platform continues to connect residents in interesting ways. The local recommendation feature is a great way to pinpoint your search for service providers your friends trust.

Twitter-

Some neighborhood associations utilize this platform to communicate with residents. Be sure to look for your association on Twitter. Another great way to use this platform is to follow your local utility company, county and town governments, and other local leaders. For instance, here in Philly, PECO has a twitter account that is a great way to learn about the latest happenings when it comes to outages or other important utility related news.

Instagram-

This may seem like an unlikely place compared to some of the other platforms, but this photo sharing app is a great way to follow nearby businesses. From special events, important announcements, and more, keeping an eye on your favorite spot’s Instagram account is a great way to keep connected in your community. Look for the Philadelphia Free Library or the Philadelphia Zoo via this platform for exciting photos of recent events and fun happenings you won’t want to miss.

You can also use location tags on Instagram to find other people who are in your area. Tag your neighborhood or area to get to know your neighbors and possibly connect with local businesses you didn’t know about.

Let us know the creative ways you connect with your community using these and other social media platforms. We’d love to learn how we can get to know our neighbors even better!
