Homeowners Spring Maintenance Tips
The sun is shining brighter, the sound of birds singing has returned, and now it’s time to get your garden ready. Here are a few fundamental gardening tips that need to be done this spring!
- Spring Cleaning- Now is the time to get into your garden and do some spring cleaning. Remove any debris that may have fallen in it during the cooler months. Pick all those pesky weeds, and make sure you get the roots so they won’t return. Now is also the perfect time to pull out your gardening tools and sharpen them.
- Soil- The winters in Eastern Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey can be harsh, so the soil in your garden may be dried out and may be in need of some moisture. Your soil may also need some fertilizer added, which will increase the longevity of your plants.
- Pruning- If plants you have previously planted survived the winter weather they should be pruned to allow them to grow anew. Plants should be pruned after they start to bloom to prevent cutting future flowers.
- Mulch- After you have added fertilizer to the soil, followed by adding a layer of mulch to your garden bed. Mulch one to three inches thick helps deter weeds from growing and diseases. A layer of mulch also helps your garden keep its moisture and temperature. When applying the mulch you want to keep it just a few inches away from your plants so that the roots do not rot.
- Planting- Now that the garden is in shape,it is time to plant new flowers and shrubs. Some good plants to plant during the spring include: lilacs, tulips, redbuds, pansies, snapdragons, and vegetables such as lettuce, peas and tomato plants.
A well–maintained yard improves your home’s curb appeal and adds to its value. Your home only gets one chance to make a good first impression. A little bit of time and effort on your part can easily add to the value of your Eastern Pennsylvania or New Jersey home.
