Home Energy Saving Tips To Prepare For Spring
While it may not seem like it now, warmer weather is just around the corner. Flowers will be blooming and grass will be once again green. Start making plans now to make changes this spring to help save energy and lower your utility bill with these tips.
Air Conditioner Maintenance
Spring is the perfect time to have your air conditioner serviced. An AC tune up will ensure your AC runs as it should when you’re ready to turn it on. Replace your filters, clean the evaporator coils, and check its refrigerant levels. If you don’t feel comfortable with doing these tasks yourself hire a local HVAC technician. By doing routine maintenance on your home’s AC you can save energy consumption by up to 15 percent.
Water Heater Maintenance
In the spirit that comes with spring cleaning - add water heater maintenance to your list. From hot showers to washing laundry, your water heater plays an important role inside your home. To prevent costly repairs down the road, perform water heater maintenance each year. Some experts recommend draining a quarter of the water from your hot water tank to remove any sediment that may have built up. Turn the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees to prevent scalding water and cut down on energy costs.
Spring Clean The Fridge
When it comes to the largest energy user in your home the refrigerator may just be the culprit. The average refrigerator makes up 14 percent of a household’s energy consumption. To save energy, properly clean your fridge. First, pull the refrigerator out from the wall and dust the coils to remove up any built up dust. On the inside, clear out any old food to allow air circulate again. However, don’t leave your refrigerator empty, by being at least two-thirds full it prevents large amounts of air from escaping every time you open the door.
Adjust The Thermostat
When the warmer weather does arrive you can save energy by simply adjusting your thermostat. To be comfortable during warmer weather many experts say room temperature needs to be at 78 degrees. By turning up the thermostat you could save up to 8 percent on your home’s energy bill. Save even further by investing in a smart thermostat that will adjust automatically to increase the home’s temperature while you are away.
Energy Star Appliances
If you are planning on purchasing new home appliances in the near future consider buying those that are Energy Star qualified. By installing Energy Star rated appliances in your kitchen you could potentially save up to 50 percent on your energy consumption.
Spring will be here before we know it so start making plans now to reduce your energy consumption when it arrives.
