A Lush Lawn for Less
A lush, green lawn is on everyone’s wish list for the warm months. The grass may currently be brown or yellow, it’s actually the perfect time to make your grass seeding game plan.
As soon as the weather starts to warm up, it’s a great idea to think about getting things seeded. Your lawn will appreciate the extra TLC and you’ll love getting a chance to reap the rewards of a beautiful lawn the neighbors will envy.
Here’s our checklist for spring seeding:
Temperature: We’ve had a rough winter this year. Your lawn may show signs of erosion or bald patches due to the harsh conditions. Seeding will remedy that. But it’s important to wait until the weather hits its sweet spot. Fifty degrees is a good target temp to aim for. If temps are consistently much lower, seeds won’t germinate and take hold in your yard.
Preparation is Key: Don’t throw seed on tall grass or patches of leaves. It’s a great idea to mow your lawn on the lowest setting. Then clear the lawn with a rake so that the seeds are able to do their job and reach the soil underneath.
Talk to the Garden Experts: What type of grass grows best in our region? What type of seed should I sew in a shady spot? How do I handle my yard’s unique soil? All of these questions can be answered by a professional at your local garden center. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from someone who knows what they’re doing.
Get the Right Tools: A seed spreader is an obvious choice. Another item that some homeowners forget, is a high quality sprinkler. Obviously a professional sprinkler system isn’t in the budget for most of us. But a good moving sprinkler will help to water your entire lawn evenly during the crucial first few weeks. Plus it’s a great insurance policy when the rain isn’t dependable.

Water Levels: This can feel like the trickiest part. For the first 2 or 3 weeks, it’s a smart idea to keep the lawn well-watered. This is definitely not a massive soak down. The Goal is to keep the soil damp for a few weeks to allow the grass seed to really take hold.
We hope these tips make it easier for you to get the lush and enviable lawn you’ve always wanted this summer!
