5 Must Do Things Once You Move Into Your New Home
Moving to your new Eastern Pennsylvania or New Jersey home is an exciting time. While buying and moving can be both fun and stressful at the same time, here are few must do things to not forget once you have officially gotten the keys to your new home.
- Protection- Now that you are in your new home, one of the first things you should do is change out the locks. There is no way to safely tell if anyone else who has previously lived there may still have keys. It is better to be safe than sorry.
- Inspect Your Belongings- Moving can be a big task and many people choose to hire movers to help pack and move their belongings. If you have hired a mover you will have a short period of time where you can report any damage to your items or let the moving company know of any missing items. Take the time to inspect your belongings carefully and notify the moving company if there are any issues. If you hired someone to move a major appliance such as a washer, dryer, or refrigerator, make sure they are all functioning and working properly. If you discover any issues check your paperwork to determine if there is liability coverage.
- Car and City Registration- If you have moved from out of state don’t forget to change your license plate registration to your new state. If you are moving to a new city, check your city’s ordinances to see if you need to register your vehicle there as well. Last but not least, do not forget to get a new driver’s license with your updated address within 30 days of moving.
- Paint- A fresh coat of paint with a color of your choice will help you feel more at home in your new surroundings. The longer you wait to paint the tougher it can be as moving heavy bulky furniture isn’t an easy task. It is best to paint before you move in any bigger items so that you are not obstructed.
- Change Your Voting Address-Updating your voting address is one of those things that can easily be forgotten when you move. In many states they will allow you a 60-day grace period from the time you move to use your previous address at your new polling facility. However, for any election beyond that time period you will need to register to vote with your new address at a minimum of two weeks prior to any election.
