5 Home Maintenance Tasks You Need To Tackle In September
Labor Day marked the unofficial ending of summer and the weather is starting to feel like autumn. Before those autumn leaves begin to fall it’s time to tackle a few home maintenance tasks to protect your home from the colder days ahead. Here are 5 home maintenance tasks that are relatively painless to tackle this weekend.
1.Exterior cleaning and repair
It is not uncommon for your home’s exterior to become dirty over the summer and September is usually the perfect time to clean it up. Inspect your home’s exterior for any areas that are no longer intact or rotten. Examine caulking to make sure it’s still intact and make any needed repairs. Finally, clean the outside of your home’s exterior using a power washer.
2.Determine if all windows are in working order
Before the cold weather of winter hits, you should make sure the windows in your home are in working order. Windows that are double or triple pane should have a noticeable tight seal along the perimeter. If you notice that your windows appear foggy it’s a sign that the seal has failed and repairs need to be done.
3.Change your furnace filter
Each month you should be changing out the filter in your furnace. Air filters that are dirty can cause damage to your HVAC system as well as increase your energy bills.
4.Examine concrete for cracks
September is the perfect month to examine the concrete around your home’s exterior for any cracks. Have cracks repaired now before slippery weather arrives so you or your visitors don’t fall or trip. Many smaller cracks can be repaired easily on your own, but serious cracks should be repaired professionally.
5.Inspect your roof
Inspect your roof before the winter weather arrives. Look for any damaged or missing shingles as well as any loose or damaged flashing along the chimney. Hire a professional to get your roof fixed if you notice any damage.
