If you are looking to add a dog to your family this summer the number one thing you need to do before welcoming it into your home is to make sure your yard is secure and safe for them. Your new family member should be able to be safe in their new yard. They should not be able to escape or harm themselves. Here are 4 tips to keep your dog safe in your yard this summer.

1.Fencing

Unless you will be outside with your pet at all times and keep them on a leash, it may quickly become a necessity to have a fence. If you choose to have a fence installed or you already have a fence make sure that it is tall enough that they can’t jump over it. It is recommended that your fence is at least six feet tall.

Some dogs escape a yard by digging underneath a fence, so keep a close eye out for this. If your new family friend likes to dig, keep heavy stones along the base of the fence.

Regularly check the fence for any weak spots or any holes that could allow the dog to escape.

2.Crawl Spaces

If your home has a crawl space, secure it so that the dog is not able to access it. There are numerous stories of dogs crawling into them and becoming trapped.

3.Dangerous Plants

If there are any plants in your yard that are toxic to your dog you should remove them. Some known flowers that are toxic to dogs are azaleas, lilies, and daffodils.

4.Lawn Care Safety

If you have your lawn treated by a professional lawn company that will be applying fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides, always communicate with them about possible danger to your pets and what you need to do to keep them protected.  As a good rule of thumb always keep your pets inside while your lawn company is applying chemicals and immediately following application.

Never leave your dog in the yard for an extended period of time without water or access to shade.
