4 Simple Tips To Cut Your Summer Energy Bills
With the temperature rising so is your energy bill and it may leave you looking for ways to keep cool without breaking the bank. The amount you pay for summer cooling costs can have a major impact on your budget.
4 Simple Tips To Cut Your Summer Energy Bills
1.Adjust the thermostat.
Each degree you increase your thermostat you will save 7-10 percent on your home cooling costs. If you don’t currently have a programmable thermostat invest in one or, if the budget allows for it, switch to a smart thermostat. A smart thermostat allows you to adjust the temperature in your home remotely, and many of them have the capabilities to learn your habits and adjust the temperature in your home accordingly. You can save 5-15 percent on your energy bills annually with a smart thermostat according to Energy.gov.
2.Use window coverings.
A home with a lot of windows do a great job of letting a lot of light into the home, but they also let warmth in as well. This is great for the winter months but not so much when it comes to the heat of summer. Reduce your energy bills by using window coverings on your windows and keep them covered during the heat of the day.
3.Use a ceiling fan properly.
A ceiling fan can be used all year in your home if used properly. During the summer months adjust your fan so that it runs counter-clockwise pushing air straight down. The fan provides a breeze in the room which could make the room feel up to 8 degrees cooler. During the winter have the fan speed clockwise pulling cool air up.
4.Avoid the use of heat generating appliances.
Avoid the use of appliances that would generate heat. Using the oven or stove on warm days, or doing laundry during the heat of the day can heat up your home making your air conditioner run more. Consider using a crockpot or toaster oven in lieu of your stove for summertime cooking. Doing your laundry in cold water reduces the use of your water heater and can help lower your energy bill as well.
